Painting I

PAINTING STATEMENT
| Marks on canvas or paper are very important to me. Accident
and intuition are an important aspect of my work. When I start
painting, I usually never know what the final work will ultimately
look like. I consider myself an abstract expressionist. But from
time to time I do paint portraits or representational work. It
seems to center me and allows me to go back to what I really love
to do…. paint abstractly…clearly, freely and instinctively. It is
important to me to do work that represent my own energy and
feeling. Painting to me is a “happening”. It is the energy between
the painting and myself. My focus becomes intense. The idea will
start to form from the laying down of color next to color, maybe a
shape or just the brush strokes of paint. I am interested in the
push-pull, the weight, movement, the balance and color of the
paint. They shove, get along with each other or just stand still.
They exist and tell their own story. This excitement for painting
itself will develop into a large body of work. |
